History in the making
The Blaze Off is one of the oldest contests in the four state area, behind only the American Royal and the Great Lenexa BBQ contests. The last 14 contests have been large enough to qualify our Grand Champion in the International Invitation Contest.
This year will be our 26th year! The first blaze off in 1984 hosted 7 teams competing under the “downtown water tower” during the Cities’ Fall Fun Festival. Since then we have changed the contest date to prelude the annual Festival and moved to a larger location because we have grown to over 70 teams.
The Blue Springs Barbeque Blaze Off takes place annually the first weekend after Labor Day. To learn more about the 2012 Blue Springs Barbeque Blaze Off activities, download our flyer or enter the competition by downloading our entry form.
The Blue Springs Barbeque Blaze Off received a special honor in 1989 when Governor John Ashcroft proclaimed the contest a Missouri State Championship.
The BlazeOff introduced the “Buck-a-Bone” public tasting contestant selling in 2003 and it has been overwhelmingly received!
An event of this size takes loads of people. A core committee of approximately 10 people meet monthly year round to plan and organize all of the behind-the-scenes stuff. We are fortunate to utilize over 50 volunteers for the actual contest. We are always in need of more volunteers, anyone with a willingness to help should feel free to contact us. You just might have a great time, make new friends and eat some incredible BBQ.
